We recently caught up with Marie Meskheli, Founder of Delfy Cosmetics, a premium international cosmetics brand that is based in Barcelona, Spain. Here Marie shares her inspiring journey on creating a successful international cosmetics brand, overcoming challenges during the pandemic and reveals what is next for Delfy Cosmetics!
Tell us about your business, what do you do?
I am Marie Meskheli, the founder of Delfy Cosmetics, an international cosmetics brand that is based in Barcelona in Spain. Delfy Cosmetics offers an innovative, trend-led, premium, high performance range of professional-quality and hypoallergenic make-up, skincare, body care and nail care. Delfy Cosmetics combines high quality formulations with innovative patented technology. Free from parabens and cruelty-free, Delfy Cosmetics is enriched with natural ingredients that are kind to your skin.
What is your company ethos?
We create Intelligent Cosmetics with a sophisticated and unique design.
What did you do before you launched your own business?
In 2006, I graduated from Tbilisi State Medical University with a degree in Pharmacy. Then I continued my education further at the same university, graduating in 2012 with a PHD in Pharmacy. The work was conducted within the framework of the Tbilisi State Medical University and Marseille Mediterranean University in Marseille, France.In 2010, I opened my first Aesthetic Medicine Centre, Lotus, which was extremely successful. I have now expanded and have a chain of 12 centres operating within the group.
What inspired you to start your own business? What was your lightbulb moment?
After several years of research and development, I had strong ambitions to develop my own cosmetics brand. In 2013, I moved with my family to the city of Barcelona in Spain. This was a big change and I saw this as a new opportunity to venture into the cosmetics industry. Here I was able to combine my pharmaceutical, pharmacological and chemical knowledge with my expertise of working in the aesthetics industry to create and formulate an innovative range of high-performance cosmetics and Delfy Cosmetics was born.
When did you start your business?
We launched Delfy Cosmetics in 2016. In a short period of time, we were able to enter new markets in several countries worldwide and be as flexible as possible. For a new, start-up company that did not have strong financial support, this was literally unimaginable. On the one hand, we were able to find our place in several international markets and identify suitable distributors, at the same time it was also essential that we maintained a stable quality and continuous supply.
What has been your biggest challenge?
When working on a new project, our main challenge is always to create the formulation, that will be focused to solve fully the problem that we set. We carefully choose the material based on multiple research, using world-leading technologies, innovative formulations and combining this with a unique design. Another important factor, that makes us unique in the market is the variety of our lines. We create products for both professional and personal use in the make-up, skincare and nail care fields. All materials are strictly controlled by a healthcare professional laboratory, which is a guarantee of the products safety and efficacy.
What has been your greatest achievement?
For me personally, the biggest success was when we got our first loyal customers. They gained confidence in the company and the quality of its products. They love our range and are always looking forward to novelties. I then realised that all the effort and hard work that I was doing, and most importantly the idea itself was worth it.
What is next for Delfy Cosmetics?
In 2020 we started 3 of our biggest projects in fragrance, nail care and skincare. For the first time in the company’s history, we launched our own Perfumery line. After spending of 2 years in the capital of perfumery – Grasse in France, we have created a luxury line of fragrances with 5 different scents. We have also created our first unique and luxury perfume named the ‘Exclusive Fragrance’, where we present 2 absolutely different scents in combination, in the separate bottles, connected with elegant leather strips. This unique fragrance duo allows you to spray both fragrances together, creating an unforgettable scent or alternatively you can spray each fragrance separately.The concept of dualism is the philosophy of our new luxury pair of perfumes, describing how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. These 2 energies cannot exist without each other. They attract one another, moreover, they look at each other in themselves.
At the same time, we just launched the most colourful line of hybrid Nail Gels with the duration up to 21 stay! The studio gel has a hybrid liquid texture with the active vitamin rich formulation, that guarantees “nail’s breathing” and avoids the colour changings (mostly yellowish) of the healthy nails.
We have also seen a very high demand for our skincare products this year. Delfy Cosmetics 24k Gold skincare line that we produce in France has become one of our bestsellers and that dictated us to expand this division with a selection of new products.
How has the pandemic affected your business?
We had very big plans for 2020, probably like many of you. Consequently the COVID19 has turned all our plans upside down. For more than 3 months, all of our strategic markets have been locked, including Spain. On the other hand, this time out has forced us to stop for 1 minute and allowed us to analyse our situation, our approaches and to look at our main goals.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter your industry?
Today, it can be extremely challenging to create a new and successful international make-up brand, especially when the market is full of numerous cosmetic brands and competition is high. Moreover, we now live in a world where we have to compete with the virtual world, with different apps etc. Therefore, it is essential that you are 100% committed, fully prepared and have a set of clear objectives before you take the first step. Remember, the process from developing and creating your products to the final sales process is very long, so be patient! And believe in the result!
How do you relax and unwind after a busy working day?
I am a mother of two children. My job takes up a lot of time, so I always try to spend my free time with my kids. I understand that time passes quickly and that they are growing up fast, so I do not want to miss anything. We play together, we read books, etc, but the most important thing is to be able to listen to them and share my advice.
